| Articles >> ABNORMALITIES IN THE SEXUAL RESPONSE: RATIONAL OBJECTION TO MASTURBATION - IT MAY HAVE AN EFFECT ON LATER ADJUSTMENT IN MARRIAGE
There is a further rational objection to masturbation in the possibility that when carried to excess it may have an effect on later adjustment in marriage. In women it may establish so firmly the habit of the vulvar type of orgasm that they will not be able to obtain the more complete satisfaction of the vaginal orgasm in coitus. In men excessive masturbation may cause premature emission. Either of these conditions makes sexual intercourse unsatisfactory, particularly for the wife. It must be stressed, however, that there is no conclusive evidence of such a causal relation between masturbation and sexual maladjustment. This must simply be regarded as a possibility, based on some clinical evidence. There are so many other factors in civilization which may cause inadequate orgasm in women and partial impotence in men—long-delayed sexual expression, improper moral and esthetic training, and various "abnormal" conditions of urban life—that we must confess to having practically no certain knowledge regarding cause and effect in this field. Until more is known, one who has to face this problem must simply bear all the possibilities in mind and make the best guess he can.
